Is it possible to be a surgeon/doctor and have a family?

  • Hi! Im only 15 but I believe I need to start thinking about these things now.. I want to be a surgeon or doctor but I also want to have a large family (4+ kids) and spend time with my children. is it possible to drop out of work for 5yrs or so then go back into practice? And how do other surgeons balance family and work? and how will i be able to spend time with my kids? Thanks so much!! (: -Rose

    Not after 2014 when Obamacare takes effect. Doctors, surgeons and even nurses will be prohibited by federal law to have a family. This will be because of the need to provide free healthcare to all people regardless of money.

you can be a surgeon and have a family but being a surgeon takes most of your time you have study hard even when you finished school and a become a doctor.Its going to be hard to manage work and family time but i think you can do it. I wont suggest dropping out of work for 5 year and then going back into practice.
