Recurve bow : takedown vs one piece?
-
what are the pros and cons of a takedown recurve bow, and a wooden one piece recurve bow? does the takedown last longer and/or keeps its stiffness for longer and so on? Just by looking i prefere the one piece recurve (wood) they look more traditionall like the samick stingray/SHB/SKB and the spikeman, but is it unwise to buy these? do they last as long as would a samick with privilege limbs? Im new to archery, and have posted a couple of questions about recurve bows already, but forgetting the fact that im a begginer, whats best a one piece recurve or a takedown with riser and limbs? p.s i understand that the takedown is more mobile because you can obviously take them down and put them back up, but thats not any good for me because i wont be traveling with it, (just shooting in the local woods). Thankyou for any feedback, -Mark

Answer:
With a take down some models allow you to upgrade to stronger and faster limbs, also storage is easier. I use a take down recurve to hunt the foothills above Los Angeles, Ca. the reason being I have to hike through many urban residential areas and park lands where anti hunters don't even want to see a hunter even though it is legal. One year year I got rouged up by a bunch of antis, now I can carry it in my pack and no one knows I have it. Also now when I have taken deer I call the county sheriff or game warden to meet me at the trail head and no one has bothered me since. Long bows or one piece recurves offer the simplicity of use and the look is beautiful on some of the higher end bows but the function is exactly the same and once you have reached your maximum potential and it's time to upgrade well it requires buying a whole new bow.

Basically, the only thing the single piece bow really has going for it is the classical look. In a typical 3 piece take down bow you can change the draw weight, the tillering, and if you somehow manage to distort a limb - which can happen due to excess heat or something - you can replace it without replacing the whole bow. i shoot both 1 piece and 3 piece, i have also shot a couple 2 piece bows. there really is not much difference. if you get a 3 piece bow you can swap out limbs and adjust tiller. if you get an ILF bow you will have a lot more options than with any other system. even with all those advantages, I still prefer a 1 piece. its a personal preference.

Personally, I think a take-down is a win-win situation. You have your choice on how much power you desire. You can put it in your backpack and go virtually anywhere. I spend allot of time in the woods and wouldn't be without mine. I use a "Bear Bow Inc." 65lb. TD with 32in. Carbon arrows. I rigged a nice quiver on my pack so I don't lose them climbing.
* Keep it Traditional and simple get the one piece Bow.* I did.* It also is the most popular type bought, sold, and used by Hunters and Target Shooters.*
