5 weeks old kitten pees in front of litter box?
-
My foster cat gave birth to a litter of 6. They are now 5 weeks old. All of them are using their litter box (small with small edges, right next to mama's big litter box with big edges) for peeing. They don't poop in it yet (mama still licks that), except one. But... one or two of the kittens prefer to pee on the carpet in front of the litter box. If I put them inside the litter box they pee there, if I put them in front of the litter box, they climb in the litter box and pee there. If I do not do anything, sometimes they'll go in the litter box all by themselves, and sometimes, they turn around on the carpet, miaw miserably and pee on the carpet, almost in front of the box. It's as if they can't find the way, which is absurd the thing is right in front of them, ready for use (nobody in there). The litter box is always clean, and they have no problem whatsoever climbing on the sofa, so it's not a problem related to climbing in the box. I've tried covering the carpet with aluminium foil, and the kitten in that case peed on the closest clothy surface available (=my slippers, that were right next to the carpet). Any idea why they would do that and how to correct that behaviour ? I'm using World's Best Cat Litter, which all the cats seem to like. The ones who pee on the carpet most particularly like to dig in the litter. I'm puzzled.

Answer:
I think it is a matter of them still learning. They are really only starting to get mobile. Instead of aluminum foil, get some puppy training pads and put it where the kitten urinates on the carpet. And while I don't have any experience, is it possible that the kitten who urinates underestimates how long it can hold it. Realize that is true with very young children. In other words, an accident. Also if the spot is not totally cleaned up free of any scent, they will return there to do it again. For approaches in cleaning up those spots, see link.

You have made a start. They go in the box when you put them in. It will take some vigilance on your part - keep an eye on the kittens especially after they have fed. Put them in the box right away. It is kind of crazy how some cats train easier than others.

You say the youngsters' litter box is "small with small edges". Have you tried using a "cake pan" size litter box ( or even use a cake pan )? These are only 2" tall, so a kitten doesn't have to "climb" in.....Maybe, that would work better for that one who doesn't like to climb? Climbing onto a sofa is NOT the same as trying to get over the "lip" of a box. The kittens use their claws to climb on furniture...... Once the kittens get a little bigger, you can go back to the box you're using now..... As for the carpet, you can get a plastic "place mat" and set it in front of the box.......or a few so that you can "cover" all sides.......much easier to wipe off than clean the carpet! Hope this helps......Good luck.
