How do I convince my parents to host a foreign exchange student?

How to convince my parents to let me do a student exchange to Japan?

  • I've been in love with Japan and I really want to get the experience of going to a high school there. I mentioned an exchange to my mom twice (without mentioning Japan) and she seemed to be worried and unconvinced. I know that mentioning Japan will make her feel even worse about the idea, so I want to know how I should bring it up. My parents are also afraid of letting go in a way, like I know that me being on the other side of the world is a total nightmare for them. To convince them I've been thinking of raising the money for the trip myself (which is like 10 000$) and instead of only going for a year abroad I want to go for a semester (so 3 months). Are there any good reputable exchange programs available that offer 3 months, becaus so far I've only seen a full year... I'm also a cello student and I've been studying music for 9 years so far. I want to to be able to do music abroad as well. I could just bring parts and learn them while I'm away but I want to know also if there are exchange programs that offer extra curricular programs while away. In summary, I would like to know how to convince my parents to let me go to Japan while I'm still in high school (because they think you only do this stuff when you're in university), and what exchange programs suit my needs. Thanks a bunch! P.S. I've been looking at YFU: is that a good program? I've been getting stuff from both sides and I don't know weather it's very good or terrible -_-"

Say that you need to learn to be independent and live life to the fullest. The fact that you're trying to fund it yourself also shows that you really want this- so mention that. Say that you will miss them but it's something that you really want and want to try. Normally parents are really attached to their children. So you need to reassure them that you will be OK and that you won't forget them lol. Thats how you convinve them :) As for the programmes- i have no idea. Sorry i couldn't be of more use. Hope this helps! :)

About programs, maybe CIEE has good programs to go to Japan.. I'm not sure if they offer them, but they do it at least with the U.S. ... you should try and check the web out: www.ciee.org I'm doing a foreign exchange program abroad, in the U.S. and in my case it was really easy to convince my parents.. I didn't even have to try xD I just told them what I was going to do it :P and yeah, I'm in high school. You should convince them using arguments like that a foreign exchange student is really useful, you learn A LOT of things, and not only a language... you learn culture, you learn about the world, you even learn new things about yourself. To be a foreign exchange student is an AMAZING experience, and usually in the programs you get to stay with a host family (that is the best thing that you can do if you want to learn). It is very useful to be one! And you get to know a bunch of people and make new friends! Also you can share your own culture and spread it all over the world :) Good luck!
