Dangers of changing WPA2 to WEP ?
-
Yes, I realize WEP is weak and you're vulnerable to hack and all that hullabaloo, but what I really want to know is if it is possible to switch back and forth between WPA2 and WEP without any consequences. I bought a stupid game for my DS and I want to connect it to the internet which apparently requires that I have WEP. That wouldn't be such a hassle if someone in my house was tech savvy enough to figure this out. So yeah, I know how to get to the page to change my settings to WEP, I'm just worried that by doing so, my current WPA2 password will change and mess with all the devices in the house that connect to it. So is it possible to switch back and forth between WEP and WPA2 without consequences? ie switching to WEP just to play the game and then switching back to WPA2 right after? And if so, will the current WPA2 password change? Router is a linksys btw. SOMEONE HELP ME.

Answer:
I don't know if your DS has the same wireless set up as mine, but when I got mine, it seemed to offer the choice of WEP or no encryption at all on the wireless network. Then I discovered that on my DS, the WPA2 settings were actually hidden in a section for advanced setup. For some strange reason, Nintendo decided that WPA2 would not appear if I went through the normal simple wireless set up procedure. One other trick I needed was that the on-screen keyboard to enter the wireless security key did not have some of the puctuation characters I had in the security key that was already set up on about 7 other devices. I used the tool at http://anandam.name/pbkdf2/ to help me set up my DS for my WPA2 network. The password field is your WPA2 security key, the salt is your network name (SSID), and you have to set the number of iterations to 4096 and the number of bytes to 32. It takes several seconds to run, and it returns a 64 character code that my DS accepted as a valid key for my network. This 64 character code uses characters that are all available on the DS on-screen keyboard.

Custom firmwares are available for many wireless routers. DD-WRT and Tomato are the most popular. They have the ability to create more than one WIFI network, one could run WPA2 and the other could run WEP. The initial setup will take you a little bit of learning and effort, but it would beat constantly changing WIFI encryption settings (and keys).

You can switch back and forth. While the router's running WEP, your WPA devices won't be able to connect to it unless you change them to WEP as well (and set the WEP password). Once you restore the router to use WPA, just be sure set your password back to whatever it was before you switched over.

The password will change. If you want to avoid a hassle, buy a cheap access point and use it for WEP only, and just unplug it when not in use.

The WPA2 password will be erased, you'll need to enter it again everytime you change from WEP (same WPA2 pass) which is a big annoyance.
