What are taxes in Pennsylvania?

Are cell phone sales taxes supposed to be cheaper in Pennsylvania than in New York?

  • I have Sprint as my mobile carrier, and I recently moved to Philadelphia, PA from Long Island, NY. When I discovered that my cell phone bill INCREASED, I was very alarmed (especially when I was told by Sprint that my taxes would be cheaper in PA). Here's what caused an uproar: Under "Sprint surcharges", the total in NY was $5.59; in PA, it's $6.39. Looking into this further, I saw that the NY Gross Receipts Recovery is $0.18, while PA is $2.79 (!!!). I was also charged for SEVEN items in NY under "Sprint surcharges," while PA has only four listed. Yet, PA came out to more than NY. Lastly, under "Government Fees & Taxes," while living in NY, I had to pay NYS 911 tax, NYS sales tax, Nassau County 911 tax, and Nassau County sales tax...all amounting to $5.48. Now in PA, there's the Pennsylvania state 911 tax, PA state sales tax, and Philadelphia city sales tax....all amounting to $5.47. Only a difference by ONE CENT? Something can't be right here.... Specifically, NYS sales tax was quoted to be $1.85, while PA sales tax is $3.35 (!!!). There is definitely something wrong here, right? When I called up Sprint, I had my issue given a special case number that will be investigated. I guess there really is a problem here??? Note: I originally posted this question in the Cell Phone Plans category, but it received no answer. Let's hope I have luck in the Business - Taxes section!
