How To Fill Up Online Scholarships Form?

Why am I being asked on TurboTax to fill out form 8615 if I'm an independent with no dependents under me?

  • I'm 22, independent, a full-time student, with no children. My only claimed income is from one W2, some scholarships/grants, and a 1099-Q from my prepaid college plan. It looks like TurboTax wants me to claim $2,107 investment income for a child that doesn't exist. What's with this form? I've come across this answer: "This year the IRS expanded Form 8615 to include age 19 and under and fulltime student age 19-23. As long as the taxpayer is under 24, they could be required to file the 8615 this year. So for any taxpayer under age 24, the program needs to know if the taxpayer provided over 50% of their support. You do not have to be a dependent on your parent's return, these rules apply whether or not you are a dependent. If Form 8615 is not applicable, Go to Wages & Income/ Less Common Issues and revisit the topic Child Income (under Age 24). You will need to answer "no" on the screen titled "Are you subject to Kiddie Tax?" and that will remove Form 8615 from your return" But I still don't fully understand. I have tried going to Wages & Income and answering "No" to the Kiddie Tax under Child Income, but all I get to is a screen that asks if I have children and when I say no it brings me out of that section. Bottom line: is this an error or is it something I actually need to fill out? I asked this twice in the TurboTax community and got no answers.

  • Answer:

Ignore TRO, as usual, she's wrong, wrong, wrong. You are the KID on your return. KIDDIE tax expanded under 24 in 2008. If you are under 24, unmarried, have at least one living parent and your EARNED income is less than 1/2 of your total support, it applies. KIDDIE tax applies to ANY income that isn't from wages or self-employment income. So, according to you, you calculated your total support and you provided more than half. Please provide the amounts for wages, scholarships and the 1099-Q earnings that you couldn't exclude. It's extremely easy to owe kiddie tax if you are paying for school with loans.

It's a programming glitch. THIS is why you're not supposed to use those stupid programs. go to IRS.GOV. get the "Free File Fillable Forms" and do it yourself. do a FULL, regular 1040 form, NOT the 1040 A or EZ. That way, you won't miss any possible deductions or credits.

anyway you look at it at 22 you are no longer subject to the 'kiddie' tax
