What do I put down for EIN number when filing taxes for home daycare provider. This is my first year?
-
I am doing my taxes online and it is asking me for my EIN number. I tried leaving it blank, it would not allow me. Do I use my S.S number? I made just over $8,000. Do I really need to file?

Answer:
If you're a sole proprietor you aren't required to have an EIN. However, your customers will want your tax ID number so they can deduct their payments to you, as they will likely be eligible for the child care credit. I strongly suggest you obtain an EIN so you can provide this number to your customers rather than your social security number. Identity theft is an extreme possibility any time your give out your SSN.

Yes, you need to file. Even if you don't owe income tax, you'll owe self-employment tax, which is approximately 13% of your net profit. You should be claiming business use of the home including depreciation. There are special rules for daycare providers. You want to get the net profit down as far as possible because it's taxed at such a high rate. You should get professional assistance with your tax return. No, if you're a sole proprietor, you don't need to list an EIN. Either the program's wrong, you're using the wrong form, or you entered somthing incorectly.

The EIN number is the one issued to your by the IRS for your daycare business. That number is needed to open a Business Account at the Bank, for paying your workers and other expenses. Suggest you APPLY now or use your SSN. Yes you need to file. If you are operating without liability insurance, Board of Health inspection and municipality permit you will have big problems. The parents for sure are deducting the monies paid to you and the IRS is aware you are operating an unlicensed day care.

An EIN number is the number the business was given for filing taxes. It means EMPLOYER Identification Number. If this is your business and you registered this as a legal business you had to get a EIN number from the IRS/government to issue W-2s to employees. If you have no employees but yourself you still need this number to file taxes. You should go to a tax place if you can't figure this out. Everyone gets a W2 form mailed to them from their employer which contains the EIN on it. If you are the owner of the business you need to contact the IRS and ask them what your EIN is for your business! It is the number which identifies your company/business to the IRS.
