Should I become a fighter pilot then airline pilot, writer , politician or lawyer?
-
Im almost done with high school and I have to make a decision. Now ever since I was young I dreamed of flying a fighter, I sat in the blue angles cockpit when I was around 10 and I would absoulutly love to be a pilot. If i were to be one I would go to the Air Force after college and fly for the service requirement for 10 years, then become an airline pilot. However I dont want an extrememly boring life as an airline pilot and put hardship on family. On the other hand, ever since I was 3 and picked up a camera I always wanted to make movies, ive made dozens and really enjoy doing it. My biggest concern with becoming a writer/director/producer is not making it. Its pretty hard and the last thing I want is to fall off the side. As with a politician and lawyer, Ive always been really good at arguing and my parents and teachers have confirmed it. Ive won regionals in the debate/politics team my first year and I really enjoy debating and whatnot. However my biggest concern with this is that I dont want a boring job that is going to keep me at the state level or as a lawyer thats so boring and soul-sucking. My ideal career is something thats fun, high paying, I dont mind if a bit risky, and something I can hold my head up high doing. So as a recap, my biggest concerns are: Fighter Pilot/Airline Pilot: Not making it in the Air Force/Increadilby boring time as a commercial pilot Writer/Producer/Director: Not breaking in Politician/Lawyer: Not making it to congress/Increadlybly boring time ALSO ONE LAST BIG BIG CONCERN: NOT BEING ABLE TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, please be specific and I appreciate it:)

Answer:
I have a degree in cinema, did that for a couple of years, didn't like the industry/didn't want to end up a waiter 10 years down the line still trying sell that blockbuster script, and fell back on my first love- aviation. Got my mechanic and pilot ratings, did some good flying and wrenching but was never interested in the airlines. Ended up in aerospace building satellites which has taken me all over the world from Europe to South America. It's hard to believe that i graduated college less than 10 years ago because so much has happened since then, but the point I'm trying to make is that what you think you want to do today probably won't be what you'll be doing 10 years from now. My advice is you make moves to keep your options open- don't go to an aviation college and get an aviation degree. It's worth nothing outside(even inside) aviation. Don't get a degree in film. I have one and it has not helped me in any way. I had to start from scratch when I made the decision to leave the industry. I think you need life experience to be a good writer/filmmaker anyway(read tons of scripts in my time). Military is a good choice as an officer. If you fly military you'll be an officer(air force, navy/marines) and officers are leaders and that's in high demand in the civilian world outside of aviation. Politics/law sucks in my opinion, but only attempt law school if you really want to do that. I know several lawyers with lots of debt and crappy jobs, even no jobs. So good luck, just know that we all change with time. You'll figure it out eventually, the key is to not screw yourself into a corner with bad decisions- degrees/training that have no value but bring you loads of debt, or spending your formative years chasing a dream that never comes, leaving you with no other skill to make a living.

If you're a good lawyer, you'll make 300+ grand a year. Then, you can buy your own aircraft and fly. Simple as that. But seriously, check out the info on becoming an Air Force pilot. Look up the process. And just say you got fighters and loved it.... why leave after 10 years to be a "boring airline pilot?" You don't HAVE to leave. wantscheck.com -----> Pilot Slot Resources - Good place to find info on getting an Air Force pilot slot.
