Essential oils to use in perfume?
-
I want to make perfume for a present for a friend. I'm just slightly confused about which essential oils to use. I want a fresh floral scent (not cloying) with some jasmine in it, what are some examples of bridge, middle, base and top notes that I could use? And what base oil should I use? Thanks

If you want it to be fresh, then starting with a nice citrus opening would be a great idea. Jasmine (and all white florals) work really well with bergamot and lemon, so you could use either of those in your top notes. Depending on the direction you want your scent to go in, you can alternatively use lime or orange in the top notes. Things like mint, or any juicy fruit also will do nicely. In the heart, jasmine is beautiful and it works perfectly with muguet (lily of the valley) and lily. Lemon blossom also works well if you used lemon as a top note, and similarly orange blossom or neroli both go well with an orange top note, while linden blossom is beautiful alongside a lime top note. White or pink rose in the heart can also warm and sweeten the scent a little without losing any freshness or making it cloying. For the base, something woody like sandalwood or cedar would be very nice along with a touch of white musk. Also, something like tea can work well as a base note in a jasmine-centric perfume. Really I would advise you to just experiment a little with different combinations until you find one that really appeals to your senses. For the solution, you can either go with perfumer's alcohol or a base such as fractionated coconut oil, or use sweet almond or jojoba oil as a carrier oil along with the alcohol. Generally what I do is to add the oils (first base notes, then middle notes and then top notes) to sweet almond oil and then I add the alcohol. I hope that helps you, and good luck with making your perfume.
