Should you buy a used crib?
-
My best friend is having a baby (YAY!) and she has been looking on CraigsList for cribs. I have lots of other friends with children and I vaguely remember them talking about why you should never buy a used crib, so I did a little research. All of the big named websites like Yahoo, etc. say you should never buy a used crib because of safety concerns, but some of the blogs say as long as it is in good shape and only a few years old it is just fine. I personally think it is better to buy a new crib and save money in other areas, but I was curious to hear other people's opinions on the subject.

Answer:
As long as it's sturdy and in good condition then a second hand crib is just fine. But always buy a new mattress.

The crib I use for my son is 19 years old!! And works just as well as a new one.. There will always be safety concerns because people that don't watch their kids mess it up for everyone else.. As long as it has all the Pieces and screws, and is sturdy you are just fine.

You should always buy a new mattress. No matter how new it looks. Mould spores grow in the airspaces over time. Regulations have changed over the years. You'll have to decide for yourself whether a particular drop side mechanism is unsafe, or whether those slightly wide than regulation bars are an entrapment hazard, or whether it's sufficiently old that it might have been painted with lead-based paint. My kids slept in a cot made by my dad for me in 1969 with no safety stickers on it whatsoever. We used our common sense and some basic woodworking skills to make sure it was safe. But what you can't do with a secondhand one is to _assume_ it will be.

Yes you can. I would just do your homework before you buy. Make sure you don't buy any brands that have been recalled. You can get a brand new mattress for baby at Wal-mart for about $60-100. It will fit all standard size cribs. <Mattress should fit in crib VERY snuggly,no room for baby to get down into space between.>

Go for it. There's no reason not to. There will always be safety concerns. Just make sure to get a new mattress, that's the biggest issue anyway.

As long as it meets safety requirements I don't see a problem.
