How to get German citizenship (German heritage)?

My great grandfather had the German citizenship, and I understand that (I've done some research), 4 generations are eligible to become German citizens. The problem is that he died and his son (my grandfather) didn't do the paperwork to obtain the citizenship. Now the link is "broken". Does anyone know how to get it?
