Is my freshwater angelfish is sick?

Why do my Freshwater Angelfish keep dying?

  • OK So a while back i bought 6 angel fish from the store and asked if all could be in a different bag so they did. I had a tank about 3 months before i added the fish. The tank already had a Cory catfish, pleco, two rainbow sharks, and 9 Neon tetras. This tank was well developed before i added any angelfish. My water acidity was 6.5 on a test strip and the ammonia is at zero. i added my fish one by one once the tank was ready and within the week 3 angels died. then the next week all three of the remaining angel fish died. Only one other fish has died which was a neon tetra and that was because he had an injury from the other tetras. Also my tank is 30 gallon aquarium and no fish was over an inch long.I have done a check on the following and what the levels are----General Hardness-30,Carbonate Hardness-120,PH-6.5,Nitrite-0.5,Nitrate-… 0. I have only done one water change in the week and a half i have had them and i did let them sit in the water. I am a very experienced fish keeper i have just never had a fish die like this. I was unsure on the cause of their death. I figured it was a bad fish at first until all 6 died. I bought them from petsmart and i have never had any problems with their fish. I also didn't allow any water from the store to get into my tank. after fishing them out of the bag i did all the stress coat for the fish but it didn't seem to work. This fish are all small and once the angelfish pair up i put them into their own 30 gallon but you are supposed to put six in there to have a 98.68 percent chance to find a mating pair and once they mate up i take all the other fish out of the aquarium. Also the teatra are not for actual fish it just gives the angels something to mess with. i could care less about the tetras. The sharks can be school in groups of 2-6 so i think i do indeed know what i am doing. I have 6 30 gallon aquariums and 2 75 gallons. I have a turtle tank and also i have three 10-20 gallon aquariums. I keep fish for fun and work at a fish store.these fish were not all introduced at a time i bought two one day the next day two more and the next day two more. i was not planning on letting these fish stay in the aquarium more than a month so they were not going to get very big. The sharks are tiny right now and if they begin to get to big i put them in a 75 gallon with other rainbows in it. I have a plan for all the fish in the tank and only two angel fish were going to be in the tank after the month was up because i could find my breeding pairs. This tank was as clean as any other tank in our house it was just that the fish were probably all bad. I have natural decor to angelfish like a lot of sword plants and long smooth leaved plants. the bio wheel filter has a special block that i made to reduce the water disruption but a huge amount. Also one last thing, the pleco is going to a 800 gallon aquarium at my friends home so he also has a place to move to once he is too largefish are feed just regular flake fish food you find at any fish store. they are only fed twice daily and they eat everything before it even touches the ground and if it does make it to the ground it will be cleaned up by cory catfish. Rainbow sharks are not territorial at all and they prefer groups of 2-6 because they are actually a type of catfish. I have a degree in marine biology so i do know alot about fish, both freshwater and saltwater.

  • Answer:

    1. The 30 gallon sounds fully stocked without the angels. 2. Nitrites are lethal and their only acceptable level is zero. 3. What do you mean you let them sit in the water when you did a water change? You should be doing weekly partial water changes of 25% 4. Neon tetras are actual fish, and if you don't plan on keeping them healthy or well, then don't get them. They are only contributing waste to an overstocked tank.

First of all, this tank sounds overstocked. Two rainbow sharks??? wait until they get six inches long! Also, cory should be in groups of at least 5. You only have 1? Nitrate and nitrite should be at zero, along with ammonia. You should also be doing a water change of, at most, 30% EVERY week, not a week and a half. One obvious cause of this problem is that you did not acclimate your fish to the water. You acclimated the fish's water by the temperature, but not the chemistry of the water (pH, nitrates, etc.) If you were a "very experienced fish keeper" then you would have known many of these simple little things that you have done completely wrong, like acclimating the fish, stocking a tank, fish grouping, and even how to feed your fish. You only need to feed fish once a day, maybe even once every two days depending on the fish. You should do a little more research on how to care for the fish you have and find out what more you could be doing wrong with any of your other tanks.

Wow, holy moly. Huge array of problems. 1. Angelfish are usually not compatible with Tetras. It has been attempted, but I am just telling you. 2. You have 0 Nitrates? A properly 'developed' (or more known as 'properly cycled') tank has Nitrates. Nitrites should be 0. Nitrates should be at above 10 and below 20. 3. Three pairs of angels need (forgive me if I am wrong) need much more tank then that, I believe it is 75 gallons for three pairs? 4. 6.5 is a little bit low for Angels. You need to return all the fish, and properly read up on how to properly stock and cycle a tank. http://www.oscarfishlover.com/helpful-articles/cycling-an-aquarium How to cycle a fish tank. http://www.aqadvisor.com/ Decent stocking Calculator.

1. Are you feeding them -just- right.? 2. Is the water too cold/hot 3. Is the tank big enough, angel fish don't need too much room. 4. Shown to sunlight.?
