Why Do Dogs Bark?

Why do dogs growl, snap, and/or bark at other dogs on walks?

  • This happens sometimes with one of my dogs where she will growl and bark at other passing dogs on walks. I get really annoyed by this because I feel like she is provoking other dogs to snap at her and my other dog. Today, there was this old lady and her dog and we were walking on the same sidewalk. I was going to cross the street but there was another big dog on that side so I was stuck. I wait on the side but for whatever reason, she doesn't keep walking and is dawdling. Finally she starts to pass us and my dog barks and the other dog starts snapping and then all of our dogs are barking/snapping. I got annoyed with the idiot woman because she had this retractable leash that she couldn't even keep in check with her dog lunging closer to my dogs. Then she walks away and laughs as if the whole situation was amusing. She didn't even try to walk away with her dog as I was kind of stuck on the side with nowhere to move. Why do dogs bark and get all aggressive with each other on walks? It's not like they are guarding their property.

  • Answer:

not all dogs do that ... dogs who have not been trained and socialized do that ... if you have had your dog since it was a puppy, blame yourself ... and if you can't control your dogs, maybe walk them separately ... and every time you see another dog move to the side and wait patiently because IT IS YOUR DOG OUT OF CONTROL !!! seriously ... it is called training and socialization which clearly your dog missed out on ... i have a nine month old chihuahua mutt who can walk by any dog regardless of size without a peep or concern ... cuz i took the time to train him ... he is nine months in case that was lost on you ... don't complain about the woman and her flexi-leash, your are the one people complain about when you pass ... people who actually take the time to train their dogs are sickened by owners like yourself ... you don't train but you expect the entire world to get out of your way ... and try and grasp this, YOUR DOG IS THE PROVOKER !!! i don't think you should be throwing the word idiot around cuz it is used incorrectly in your post ...

Most properly trained and properly socialized dogs do not do this. Sometimes they bark because they are excited to see another dog, but snapping and growling is just due to poor socialization/training. I would take your dog to private obedience classes, or get a personal trainer.

as yorkie said it can also be domination and territorial. if your dog considers itself the alpha of the pack (you her and your other dog) then its time you teach yourself what signals you are giving your dogs that makes them think you are unfit for an alpha role. Most people blame the dogs but we have only ourselves to blame because we are their teachers by an animals understanding of pack (case of dogs/wolves) the alph is the more aggressive dominant and the one thats able to care for the others so dont blame it all on your dog unless if a vet has diagnosed some mental problems(and yes animals have those as well)

I don`t know why, but my beagle is a barker, too. When he barks I shoot him with a water pistol. It`s a nice idea and it works. Its better then cry - cause the dog think, you bark with him. I found this tipp in a ebook. I don`t know the name yet, but I found this ebook on this review site. I hope it helps u.

I agree- poor socialization. Growling/barking is okay during off leash play, but not walks (these are dogs that haven't even met each other yet!).
