Why do dogs lick owner ears?

When I wake up in the morning my dogs licks behind my ears. What does this mean. My dog is a small pomerainan.

Your dog is grooming you...............now without seeing how you and your dog are together...... can't tell if your dog is grooming you as a mother would do her pup or is being submissive as a pup would to its mother................ and depending on which it is, depends on why it it is doing it.......... so being submissive to its pack leader or being pack leader............. and whichever you could be encouraging it by laughing which is praise, so it will continue............. @DASH....it is an example of what people do and then wonder why the dog continues...... you are NOT here to police my answers or correct me you are here to post an answer to the questioner.............and I think I am in a fair safe/secure position to answer this with what I do for a living
