Home Theatre system, Subwoofer is on when Amp is off, but off when Amp is on?
-
Today I was setting up a Home Theatre system for a friend. When I had everything hooked up, I turned it all on and realised the Subwoofer was off. I turned the Sub and Amp off, verified the connections, but it was simple enough - a yellow RCA labelled "Sub" on the back of the amp next to a set of 6 more RCAs (three stereo pairs, for 5.1) so I had the yellow go to the Sub and the front LR going to the Sub aswell (since the sub had both a yellow port and a LR red and white pair). However, while troubleshooting I turned the amp off and left the sub on - and audio was coming out of the Subwoofer albeit low volume and muffled. Turning the amp back on, the Subwoofer no longer produced sound. I attempted to find information regarding the Amp unit online, but had no luck even on the manufacturer's own website (which I had to have Google translate from chinese). I just want to understand how the Sub could be on and producing sound when the amp is off, and that it would STOP producing sound when I turn the amp back on - and if there's anything I can do about this problem. Thanks.

Answer:
I think we need more information to make a better recommendation on what might be wrong. However my first impression is that you should NOT be hooking up both the SUB output and the front LR to the sub woofer. I would try it with just the SUB output hooked up and see how that works out.

Only send one cable to the sub. On the back of the receiver take the "Sub" labled input and put an RCA cable/sub cable in it. From there run the other end of the cable into either the "L" or "R" input on the sub. I know it sounds weird but this is how you hook them up. If there is a 3rd input it may say "LFE" but you can only do that if your receiver is a higher end one. You don't have to have a "L" and "R" being used at the same time and no one really does that. I sell home theater and I have an entire Polk Lsi surround system with a $700 sub that I have connect with just the "L" input on the back. So again, 1 cable from receiver to sub. "Subwoofer" input on receiver to "L" input on sub.
