Whats wrong with my mac?

I have been searching on mac forums on how to unlock my locked dvd drive, i came across a comment and the person had the same dvd drive as i did and she rung up her mac company/tech shop and they told her to try this: Turn the mac off, hold down Fn contol shift and the power button, mac will start and beep twice then after the second beephold down shift for 20 seconds and then something happened that was suppost to fix it or something, the person hadn't tried it but i was desperate to fix my locked dvd drive because i watch dvds on my laptop, as usual it didn't work, my laptop turned on there were no beeps so i held the shift down for 20 secs and when it turned on above my user it said "SAFE BOOT" what does that mean? I logged in and loaded a DVD but it didnt show up, on my desktop, i also tried to load a CD and it didn't also my sound isn't working! when i press the button to up my sound it comes up with a circle and a line through it.!! please please please help me

1: Stop doing things to your Mac if you do not understand what you are doing. 2: What is a locked DVD drive? It sounds like the drive needs cleaning which is why it is not reading the discs. 3: Do you have the built in speakers selected for Audio Out in the Sound preferences? Do you get sound when you plug in headphones?
