How do you make transparent text on gimp?

How to upload text to GIMP?

  • I downloaded some text from a free font website but can't figure out how to use them on GIMP to make a band poster. I'm also curious as to how to use brushes and text like "cookie cutters"; basically, taking a black background layer and using the stamps/brushes/text like cookie cutters to cut portions of the black layer out to create a transparent hole through which the paper will show through (I'm going to use colored paper for this, so whatever the paper color is will determine the color of the cutout). Any advice? Thanks!

    To use fonts in GIMP, they have to be inserted in to the Fonts folder in the Windows folder of operating system.

Are you talking about fonts? You need to download and install the actual font on your computer system. It has nothing to do with GIMP - GIMP just uses the fonts already installed on your system. If you download a font file, all you need to do is right click it, and choose install. Then restart GIMP and wait a few minutes while it rescans your system for fonts you just added - can take a while so be patient. Brushes can be used with the Eraser tool in GIMP. Just select the brush you want from the Eraser Tool Options (below the tool box) which shows up when you select the eraser. A single click of the eraser tool will punch a brush shaped hole through any layer that has an Alpha Channel added (right click the layer and choose Add Alpha Channel). You can do the same kind of thing with text. Type some text, right click the text layer, choose Text to Selection. Trash the text layer, select the layer (with Alpha channel added) that you want to punch through. Hit Edit > Clear.
