Which platform to use for a Wikipedia type of website?
-
The website that I want to make will be formative such as Wikipedia. Many pages containing categories and subcategories (movies, actors, genres) can be created by users (like wikipedia). The structure should be solid, meaning that links to other category pages should be easily put on all pages, creating this click through activity (again like wikipedia). For example, when you are on the Back to the Future page, The name Michael J Fox on that page should be a link to the Michael J Fox page. The website will be simple, but it will just contain many pages with information. In the future more community aspects will be added to the pages such as creating comments and a voting system. Which platform would be the best for such a website? I was thinking of Wordpress, or is Joomla or Drupal a better option? Thanks!

Answer:
wikipedia is called that, because it combines the word wiki and encyclopedia wiki is what you are looking for. a wiki is an engine that allows the creation and edition of pages as articles ordered by categories and subcategories, all this created by users. Yes, that is what wikipedia does, and that is the reason wikipedia is called like that on the very first place ( yeah, calling it "wikipedia" wasn't just some funky name they came up :P ) same way you can download wordpress to use on your own server for a blog, you can use mediawiki. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki mediawiki is the engine of wikipedia, and it is free software. drupal and joomla are cms, not wikis. wordpress is a blog system, but is not a wiki. What you need is a wiki engine. again, if you want to be like wikipedia, you can use mediawiki. is the same engine. I have personally used pmwiki, ( http://www.pmwiki.org/ ) and I must say is my favorite wiki engine so far but you can google and you'll find a lot of free wiki engines
