How to update my skype?

Right, this is really annoying me because everytime I go on sype and click 'Check for updates' it downloads all the updates, but half way through it stops and a box pops up saying 'Skype has stopped working' and turns off. Oh my gosh, can someone just please tell me is there any other way that I could update it? I have downloaded it but I need the main persons password to download things, and that person is unavailable at the moment, so I cant do that. Is there any other way which I could update it? Please I really need to use skype as I was half way through a conversation!

Answer:
Download the install file from the Skype website, remove the old version, install the new version.
