How to get onto Android Market from HTC desire?

Can anyone tell me how to get onto the android market from my phone? Since Google play has come along my app marked "Market" has been deleted and Google have obviously not deemed me worthy enough to receive a new Google Play app and icon on my phone. I have been on Google Play directly from the internet and there doesn't seem to be any Google Play app shortcut/icon I can download. Also I can't even sign in any more. What is going on? Please tell me before I sell my phone and defect to Apple....
