How do I prove that the damaged iPod Touch wasn't my fault?

• 4 days ago, my mum bought me an iPod Touch out of no reason. I didn't get the chance to open it until 2 days ago where, when I turned the iPod on, there's a lining, slightly in darker grey, about 3cm down my screen, and 1cm thick. Obviously it had been lying on my table for 2 days, and the case is in good condition, so thinking something wrong with the iPod was a very low chance. But I was wrong. After taking the iPod Touch out of the case, undoing my earphone and cable wiring, and then finally opening up the Touch, I instantly thought, "I'm doomed." And this happend at 10pm, where my mum was soundly in bed. The next day I told my mum about the iPod Touch being 'broken'. She didn't believe me when I said it wasn't my fault, but she blamed me anyway. And so, another next day passed when she decided it was time to return the iPod for a new one. The place where my mum got the iPod Touch from asked what happend all that. They told us if I had downloaded anything, because it could've been the downloading at fault. (I knew that it wasn't.) So no. They asked us if I pressed too hard on it, and 'that' happend. (I wasn't that stupid enough to do that to a new iPod.) So no again. In the end, as a result: they told her that we had to pay $85 to get the screen fixed. Because it's my mum, she doesn't want to pay $85. It was like that when I first opened it! So my question remains: How do I prove that the damaged iPod Touch wasn't my fault?
