IPod Touch headphone jack issue?

Location difference of Headphone jack on mobile devices?

  • I just recently got a iPhone 4S (my first phone ever yay!), and I is still getting use to the headphone jack being on top of the device (I've used iPod touch for 3 years). I do not yet have any complaints of the phone (i think it's just absolutely amazing), but a question popped up in my mind. I guess i was just curious: Why does most mp3 players (iPod touch, older iPod Nanos, iPod classic, and MP3s of other companies) usually located on the bottom, while many smart phones these days (all iPhones and most Androids I've seen) have their Headphone jack all in the top left corner? Is there a reason why so many companies adopted the similarity of design? It can't be coincidence right? Surely once upon a time there was some kind of issue that resulted in the new design. Or is there a "history" of headphone jack locations and see it slowly move to ts current position?
