New TV has gone backwards, why?
-
Hooked up to my TV's I have VCR's (2) DVD recorders (1) set top boxes with hard drives (2), And the ones I use the most are the Old VCR's, Why, because if I'm half way watching something I can stop it, turn the thing off & when I turn it on again the next day & press play it will start where I left off with one click of the remote. With both the others I have to find the program, then fast forward to find the place that I stopped. I know you can get devices that will take you back to this spot, but they cost a lot more. I've bought 3 VCR's that I've put aside (at about a third of the price of of any of the other "advanced" recording I have) & heaps of cheap blank tapes (going cheap as most people are converting to "advanced" technology). Yes, I still have a heap of tape in front of the TV, but this is still the better option. Am I the only dinosaur who thinks this way or should I be just one of the sheep who follows everyone else.

Answer:
If that works for you, why not? The only downside is that playback is strictly standard-def analog, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a decent plan. I keep a VCR connected to my office TV because of the large library of VHS tapes accumulated over the years. Yes, the modern thing to do would be to burn them all to DVD-Rs, and if I had a whole lot more free time, I would. Meanwhile, the old VCR works for me.

I do have a huge collection of old vhs tapes and many VCRs to play them. I plan to convert them to DVD one day. However, most of my viewing is on an old Series 2 Tivo with a built-in DVD recorder. I've already replaced/upgraded its hard drive and lubricated its fan. I actually have a new fan for it but I haven't put it in yet. The old one isn't making noises and is keeping it cool. My Tivo does remember where I left off. Unlike my old VCRs, it's so easy to program. 99.9% of the time it successfully changes the channels on my HD cable box. All I have to do is tell it what shows to record and what channel to record them from. I'm watching Beastly on it right now. I also have a DVD recorder, Blu-Ray player, ps2, and I have my pc connected to it to stream movies.
