What college program should I take in the Philippines?
-
I haven't thought of a college program yet, and I'm an incoming high school senior. It's quite alarming and stressing on my part because I'm looking forward to a great future, hence I need to be serious on what college program to choose. I know that, in order to enjoy a big aspect of college life, one must've carefully chosen his/her desired program, and that he/she is aware of what might be in store for him/her after graduating college. I've thought of programs that suit my interests, but it seems that nothing is a surefire win when it comes to big time moneymaking (laughs). Here are some things that define me. I’m good at making drawings, and I’m also interested in learning how to use various computer softwares that let you create artistic designs, drawings, etc. I’m into architecture as well; however I hate the part when you need to measure almost everything and you get to drain your ideas for days! Eventually, maybe I could get the hang of it in college, but still, I might fail or something. It’s the same with going for fine arts; I don’t know where I’ll end up. If you come to think of it, what if I just splat paint, that would make me filthy rich. Well, how ‘bout becoming an animé cartoonist? Will my work be a big hit? Plus, I love to write, travel to magnificent places, and learn other languages and cultures. It’s really difficult to decide ‘cause there’s always this uncertainty clinging to whatever decision I make. Pessimism, in my part, is mind-shattering. There will be entrance exams, so I need to prepare myself. By the way, my parents don’t want to intervene with this kind of matter; they want me to decide for myself. Besides, I never get serious answers from them. I've been spending much time scouring the net (some pages are under construction - UP Manila, some aren't updated), and I just can't make up my mind. I need your perspective and advice. If you have the perfect program in mind, please do tell. Thank you. (Programs that are available in good universities located in Manila only)

Answer:
You seem to be smart enough to figure things for yourself, so why still ask our help? Because I notice here on your written words "one must carefully choose his/her desired program"...true that is completely correct but sometimes even those people who chooses the right path for themselves end up bitter in their quest for a better life. We often hear "life is a drawing board, and we are the one who paint and put every color on it". Sometimes our effort are not enough and there are forces seen and unseen that will wreck havoc in our life. One thing is for sure, you are good at your hands. Articulate in some ways. Money is not the only motivation that you have to know from the start. Not because the profession reck money that is the profession you would like to invest in your future. Remember money doesn't bring happiness, sometimes the lack of it does. In a simple way. Ang kapalaran ni Pedro ay hindi kapareho ng kapalaran ni Juan. We all have different path or road to travel in life. Just because your friend took PT and have a mansion of her own you also like to take the course she took believing you too will have that kind of life style. Wrong mentality. Believe in your capability and ability to move on in life is the key to success not all hardwork. You are still young naturally uncertainty sip in every now and then or pessimistic sometimes. It is natural for all of us to be that way remember, God created night and day isn't it that night for us to sleep and dream and in the morning to make those dreams come true. I think you can make it big in advertisement using computer module but for now, you should explore more possibility in school and if possible ask your own professors on what kind of career or course that suited you best.

Even if you take the course that you really want to pursue, it doesn't eventually mean that it can guarantee you to achieve your desired career paths and opportunities. Once you enter college, you'll be able to explore a lot in various minor subjects and major subjects that may help you inspire to take what seems beneficial to you in the future. You might even get the chance to shift to another course. At some cases, college organizations like the extra-curricular ones, those basing from your chosen course student council, and many more might even help you.

i envy your parents... but believe me, they WILL intervene if you still can't think of a course when the time comes to send in your application. hate to say this, but DLS-CSB is probably the best school for you to harness your interest in the arts. back in the day, it was just Multimedia Arts and Industrial Design. now they have Animation, Digital Film Making, and Architecture (though there are other schools with more established architecture programs). you might as well consider Liberal Arts/Humanities courses of other schools since writing, travelling, and learning languages/cultures aren't far from each other.
