How should I learn kanji?

• Hi, I'm a beginner of Japanese and decided it's time to learn Kanji. I got a Kanji dictionary, and just wondered how I would go about learning the kanji. I will go in the jōyō order, but how will I learn each kanji? I will learn it's English meaning, but is that the only thing I should learn? (e.g I could learn the compounds but that will only increase my vocabulary + I would have to learn the other new kanji). I'm so confused about how to do this. NOTE: I do not want to learn any on and kun readings, as that will only help me with attempting to read the kanji (and I would rather (If I had to) get a feel for the readings through learning compounds). How do I do it?

  Start with the very basic kanji and practice writing them with the correct stroke order. I find it helps if you create some small cards with the kanji on them, so you can flick through them daily and this really helps you memorize them. Try and learn a certain amount of kanji each day as this helps you build up your kanji ability. I tried to learn 5 kanji per day or about 20 a week. The best resource I have found for kanji learning is the Shin Nihongo no Kiso Japanese Kanji Workbook. It starts with the basic kanji and then slowly builds up with lots of practice drills, writing exercises and space to practice the kanji.
