How much would it cost to go to Japan for 2 weeks?
-
So I'm planning a trip to Japan in the future, so I was wondering how much it would cost to stay for 2 weeks. I would visit Tokyo for 5 days, Kyoto for 2, Osaka for 1, Nara for 1, Kobe for 1, Hiroshima for 1, and Himeji for 1. Should I stay in one hotel in Tokyo the whole time, or stay in Tokyo for a whole, then switch to somewhere else? Also, could you give an estimate for the trip? Including plane ticket, about what the average hotel would cost, food, transportation, etc. Thank you it's greatly appreciated!

Whoa! Slow down! With a schedule like that, you aren't gonna have a really great experience. I mean, do you want to spend the whole two weeks riding Shinkansen, or what? Pick one or two places...and concentrate on them...for example, maybe Tokyo and Kyoto. There are lots of fun things to do in and around Tokyo, but, in the end, it is just another big city. I mean, you go to Akiba, Shinjuku, and Shibuya...what's left? A trip to Sanrio Puroland? LOL For my money, I would spend all 2 weeks in Kyoto. So much to see, so much to do, so much less hassel than Tokyo. Temples, food, dance, music, culture. parks, paths...you name it, Kyoto has it. I am assuming you are going to Japan from the US. If that is the case, plan of between $1,350 - $1,750 for round trip air fare alone. Again, hotel in Tokyo cost a lot...even the budget hotels. For the same money, you can stay at a Ryokan in Kyoto. I am also assuming that you are a younger person, so luxury may not be your bag. I would say that between $7,500 - $10,000 is reasonable. Some can do it for less. Some spend a whole lot more. Even more important than money to make your visit fun is to learn about Japan, Japanese Culture and History, and the Japanese People. You will need some familiarity with the language to fully enjoy your trip. If you don't know any Japanese (and I don't mean anime Japanese), you will have a great deal of difficulty seeing stuff on your own. Many Japanese people are very shy about speaking English to people...and, frankly, most regular folks will not know very much English anyway. Contrary to popular belief, Japan is NOT English-friendly. They are friendly, but in Japanese. :-) There are several good TV series on NHK World about Japan and Japanese Culture. The best one is "BEGIN Japanology," with Peter Barakan. Anyway, learn as much as you can before you take your trip...this way, you will see what you want to see, not what a tour group wants you to see. I am excited for you. Ganbatte!

Airfare from the US is usually around USD$1200-$1500 depending on port of departure and time of year. Possibly the biggest expense will be accommodation. A regular hotel will set you back about USD$100 a night for a single room or USD$150 for a double. Try a Business Hotel for a good compromise with prices around USD$70 for a single room and USD$100 for a double. I recommend the Toyoko Inn hotel chain located all over Japan. If you plan to do a lot of travelling in Japan then it is worth getting the Japan Rail Pass, which allows unlimited travel on almost all JR trains, including the shinkansen (excluding the Nozomi superexpress). This pass can only be purchased outside of Japan and will save you travel money in Japan. I would say about USD$80-100 a day is possible done on a budget. Air fare: You need $1000-1500 if you are departing from US Hotel: Usually, you need $120 per night if you want to stay at a hotel. If you want to save money, you need to stay at a hostel which will cost $40-60 per night. If you want to stay at a luxury hotel, you need $250-300 or more. Food, transportation and others: You need $60-120 or so per day. If you want to enjoy shopping, you need more. So you need $120 for hotel and $90 for others per day. If you want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks, the total cost will be $2940.

No one on this site, including me, can give you an accurate amount since there are too many variables such as which airline you fly with, on what day you choose to fly(weekends tend to be more expensive), what type of accommodation you choose(kokumin shokusha, ryokan, budget or luxury hotel, hostel, shukubo), what restaurant you eat in, the type of food, how many attractions you visit, the number and what kind of souvenirs you buy etc. etc. etc. I do not recommend to stay in Tokyo the entire time simply because your schedule does not allow you to return to your accommodation in Tokyo every night. From Kyoto it is easy to go to Osaka, and Nara and Kobe are not too far from Osaka. Plan on doing your travel in the morning, then see the city's attractions in the afternoon. For a 2-week trip and to reduce your travel costs purchase a voucher for a JR Railpass at an authorised travel agency near you, then take this voucher with you to Japan and exchange it there for the real pass.(http;//www.japanrailpass.net). Osaka and Nara together can be done in one day. Shinkansen(bullet train) from Tokyo to Kyoto takes just over 3 hours. This said, I came back from a 2-week trip to Japan, and spent approx. CDN$3000, all inclusive.
