When I plug my internet dongle, I get nothing on screen?

I use to use a dongle, but changed to wi.fi. I removed all dongle downloads from my pc. I now want to use the dongle again, but nothing happens when I plug it in the usb. I tried it on a friends pc and everything was fine, so any ideas would be gratefully received

Please add additional details. What OS are you using? (Windows 7?) Are other USB devices working on your computer? Are you plugging it directly into your computer or are you using a hub? What is the brand of the dongle?
