Whats a good medication for sleep?

There really is no such thing. I've had the same discussion with doctors and nurses. There is no magic pill, there is NOTHING that will give you a full nights sleep without side effects. Ambien is very potent, and will knock you out if you take enough. But you wake up at 4am and can't get back to sleep, so you take more and are dead until 8am and then you are a zombie all day. And the side effects can be severe - anxiety, depression, pain here and there, etc. It is hellishly addictive, and if you take it for a while you can't stop taking it. Full recovery from long term ambien usage can take over a year, it does the same thing to the brain that benzos do. Hydroxyzine is not addictive, but it is very mild, and will leave you groggy the next day. It won't help with severe insomnia. Benzos are like ambien - you take enough, you sleep, but you will be sick and groggy the next day. Both benzos and ambien disturb sleep architecture. Barbiturates are no better, and if you accidentally OD on them, you can die. Seroquel and anti-depressants are sometimes given for sleep, but the withdrawals can be severe and they leave you dopey all day long. There is no magic sleeping pill that gives you sleep without exacting a harsh price for the little sleep they give you. In the end, the only way you will get sleep is by taking no medications at all, give your brain time to heal ( a year or more if you have taken benzos or ambien), and then learn how to sleep without drugs.

Have you tried "Ambien CR". Normal Ambien only puts me down for 3-4 hours. But the CR will keep me down for 6-7.
