Can you really see Russia from Alaska?

Why was Sarah Palin mocked for saying you can see Russia from parts of Alaska?

  • You probably can right? It's only like 45 miles from the most western part of Alaska to the most eastern part of Russia. I don't understand.

    Because it was a stupid thing to say. She was trying to equate being close to Russia, as foreign policy experience. "It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where - where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border," -Sarah Palin....not Tina Fey. Tina Fey just made it funny.
