Becoming a resident in Florida?

  • i currently live in Rhode island.my grandma has been living in clearwater, florida for a few years now,and i will move in with her next year. i was wondering if i could use her documents to become instate resident, immediately instead of waiting a year for collage.(Hillsborough comminty college and any information on financial aid while be appreciated ) Im new to this moving I've lived in Rhode island all my life.

  • Answer:

You can use proof that you are living with your gran to establish residency immediately. However, you must BE a resident for at least 12 months BEFORE you can get the in-state tuition rate. You can start college immediately - you just have to pay the out-of-state tuition rate. Note that if the college finds that you moved to Florida "for the purpose of enrolling" in a Florida college, you'll have to pay out-of-state rates no matter how long you stay there.
