What is wrong with my computer when the screen completely goes black?

My computer screen goes black when turned on what to do?

• i have a dell inspiron 530S desktop and when i start it it seems to start normal but after the "starting windows screen "it automatically goes to a black screen. i have windows seven.there is a cursor on the screen that i can move but nothing to select besides the cursor the entire screen is black. my keyboard seems fine i know because i pressed caps lock and the light on my keyboard came on

  Make sure that you are turning on the computer system as well and that the cord is plugged in properly and turned on at the powerpoint.
