How to get rid of ringing in ears after shooting guns?

  • I was out shooting guns yesterday and we didn't have hearing protection. I only shot a .40 caliber pistol 5 times. My ears were covered while everyone else was shooting. My ears weren't ringing until i shot. My ears were ringing all day yesterday and eventually the ringing in my right ear went away. Now my left ear is still ringing and i can hear out of it but it sounds muffled. Please help. I've looked online and I don't think i have Tinnitus because I only shot a few times.

  • Answer:

It is indeed tinnitus, if your ears are ringing. With any luck it will go away. But NEVER EVER shoot without proper ear protection! The people who took you shooting should be ashamed! Your hearing is centered in the cochlea, a beautiful array of tiny hair cells connected to the brain by the auditory nerve. Loud noises of any kind can damage it temporarily or permanently.

Other answers

Ringing in the ears is a sign of permanent damage even if it goes away. All you can do is wait it out. It's still called tinnitus even if it's only temporary.
