Teaching history at a community college?

  • I would like to teach history at a community college some day. I'm planning to get a masters and phd in history, however, my bachelors degree isn't in history. Does that matter? Also, during college I was part of a program where I was able to publish research, and I was a history minor.

  • Answer:

I need to know what your Bachelors Degree was in. However, most community colleges look at ' the whole picture ' . You state that you were included in a research paper in history. That is a definite plus in your favor. I would greatly suggest that your masters and doctorate go along the lines of education and creating something new in the discipline of history for your doctorate, for that is what a doctorate is. The doctorate, just as a suggestion, could be new ways of teaching history using the oral history approach. For example, having people who have survived the holocaust give speeches in elementary school classrooms so that early aged children understand the concept of understanding, compassion and empathy. The sooner we teach that the better the world will be.

Well, I've had two History professors who only had a Master's in History. One had a Bachelor's in Liberal Studies and the other had a Bachelor's in Political Science.
