Which is Better TEFL or TESOL certificate?

A good TESOL TEFL TOEFL certificate?

  • So I am applying for a job that wants me to have a "TEFL certificate". I have avoided getting one of these because there are so many organizations and I feel that there is not a high standard of them. I have seen 100 hour courses online, then there is a popular oxford seminars which cost over a thousand dollars which is done in six days over the course of three weekends. I really don't know what makes a good program. I suppose I will do one of these programs being that I really want this specific job. Also if an online course says 100 hours, is that an estimation? Or is it based on for example 50 2 hours videos that you have to watch, similar to online drivers education courses? Thanks for you help, God Bless you all!

  • Answer:

Well we offer a 120 hour course (which is a standard minimum these days). The hourly figure is based upon an estimated time it would take to complete the work with extra reading and suchlike. Some people complete it much sooner and some take longer. It really depends. Our course consists of 5 modules which each contain reading material, a short online check and then a written assignment which is graded by your personal tutor. Some courses (especially online) lack even a tutor and are all graded automatically so avoid those at all costs! Our course: http://icalweb.com

I have just finished the oxford seminars 6 day , 3 weekend course and now I have 40 hour online course to finish....I liked the program...The 40 hour online component has a grammar book and you need the books from the course as well...online component is mostly about English grammar... there is a test to finish the online component.. Our teacher was also teaching ESL and he had overseas teaching experience too. So I found the program very educating...

Most unaccredited courses lack a proper Methodology module as they are a general overview of the ELT industry. A good program teaches to create professional lesson plans. The general standard for certification is 100 hours. Some schools prefer teachers who hold an advanced certificate such as TESL Canada, Trinity CertTESOL, or CELTA.
