Would this be a good beginner's cello?

How much should I charge for teaching cello?

  • I've been learning for about 9 years and this summer I'll be taking a course on teaching the cello to beginners. I'll be teaching from home and I want to save up the money from the classes to pay for a student exchange abroad next year (so I'll need 10 000$). I'll probably start teaching on weekends in september. My parents say I should charge 25$ an hour and 15$ a half hour. I've been reading online though that teens my age are charging around 30$ an hour and they've been learning for even less time... So what should I do? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

It depends on where you live. If you live in NY City where the prices are high then $30 is fine. If you live in a small town you will not get that much. Actually since you have no experience teaching it is going to be hard for you to get students. This type of job is dependent upon word of mouth. You might be better off starting even lower. I Know that you are trying to pay for your exchange program, but there is no way you are going to do it teaching cello with no experience over a summer and on weekends.

ring up someone who does it already and ask how much they charge. Good player doesn't mean good teacher so it doesn't matter how long you've been doing it as long as you can teach it
