Career options for a double major in biology and chemistry?

Should I get a degree in Chemistry or Biology?

  • I am currently a pre-dental student with an associates in general science. I am working to get my bachelors degree so I can go to dental school. I am trying to figure out if it is best to get a degree in chemistry or biology. I need to pick the one with the best career options just in case I never get accepted into dental school because it is very hard to get in. I need to pick the one where I can make the most money. I have heard people say you can't do much with a bachelors in Biology, but I have no clue. PLEASE HELP

  • Answer:

For dental school, the best choice would be biology. That would best prepare you for the Dental Admissions Test, whereas the chemistry portions of the test only require introductory knowledge of general chemistry and organic chemistry. As for job prospects, I'm not sure about chemistry because I didn't go that route, but I can give you some insight into biology. You could do anything from environmental field research to working in a hospital to specimen processing for dialysis centers to education research. Alternatively, you could consider majoring in biochemistry, double majoring, or minoring in one or the other. Just choose the major that you are most interested because that is where you are more likely to succeed regardless of job outlook. And if you focus on getting in vs. making plans for not getting accepted then you won't have anything to worry about. Hope this helped and best of luck to you
