Is an M.A. necessary before you get a PhD?

Can you get a PhD in Psych. w/ a MA in Art Therapy?

  • I'm currently getting my BFA and majoring in Studio Art (Concentration: Drawing) and Minoring in Psychology. With this degree I can apply to get into a master's program for Art Therapy. I plan to pursue a career as an Art Therapist, but many people claim that it's a hard field to get into and a very rare one to be successful in. Success isn't everything but I would like to be able to pay off my student loans and live off more than Ramen for the rest of my life. So if my plan fell through, would it be possible to go back to school and try to get a PhD in Psychology? Would my Degrees be enough? Or would I need to get another masters in psychology?

  • Answer:

You can be admitted to a doctoral program in psychology with a bachelor's degree in psychology. You need a bachelor's degree to be admitted to a master's degree program in psychology.

If you're worried about paying off your loans then a ph.d or psy.d in clinical psychology is not for you, at all, unless you're one of the top top students and can land a full ride scholarship somewhere. The average cost of a doctorate degree from a non funded program is 120,000 to 200,000 plus interest and whatever debt you have from undergrad and your masters degree. As for which degrees can get you in to which programs... It sounds like you're set on getting a masters in art therapy so lets go from there. You don't need a masters in anything to apply to a ph.d or psy.d program, just a bachelors (not necessarily in psych, in fact your passion and path would actually be looked upon favorably if you could get some research experience.) Most psychology doctorate programs require a bachelors degree, a few require a masters in psych. Some masters students apply to the programs thats only require a bachelors degree and they only get to skip a few classes. It still takes them the full 5-7 years to get their ph.d/psy.d Honestly getting a doctorate in clinical psych shouldn't be a backup plan. Its ridiculously expensive and takes a long long time.
