Do I have any chance going to UCLA?

Will I have a chance in UCLA? or other colleges? Please help me improve!?

  • i have extremely bad freshman grades. I averaged a 2.65 GPA freshman year, earning many B and C. I even have a D+ in honors english first semester which I went to summer school for and got an A. But all i got was the credit in summer school because there was only regular english in summer school. My sophmore GPA was a 4.0 and 4.13 GPA respectively. My first semester of junior GPA was 4.5 and probably going to get the same for 2nd semester. Since my high school does not weight our overall GPA, I highey doubt i will get in top 15% for my class because of my freshman GPA. I took every honors/AP classes I could except for 10th grade english, APUSH, 11 AP english, and probably not going to take 12 AP english. My highest SAT score is 2070, but thinking i will get 2150+ before i apply. I have multiple activities: 8 year martial arts, 12 year band, and chapter officers position at my schools DECA club. I want to major in engineering or business. I am looking to go to UCLA, USC, UCSD, and UC davis, respectively from most interest to least. Please be realistic in my chance of getting in, and how to improve my chances, as i have an year ahead of me.

  • Answer:

The UCs do not consider freshman grades for admission. They use the UC-GPA which is explained on the websites of the UC campuses. At this point you appear to have a chance for admission to UCLA, but due to space limitations about two qualified applicants are rejected for every applicant who is admitted. USC is probably the most flexible and easiest for admission of the campuses you named, but once again, due to limited space only about one in three qualified applicants is admitted. UDSD is not quite so competitive as UCLA, so your chances of admission to UCSD are better than for UCLA. UCD is the easiest for admission of the listed UCs, but more than half of qualified applicants are turned away due to lack of space. You may list four UC campuses on your UC application. Be sure to list them in your order of preference as frequently a student is admitted only to the highest listed choice for which the student would be accepted even if the student would also be accepted at another campus.

Colleges put more weight in the last two years (even more in the last year) of coursework. Admittance isn't just based on your gpa anyway. Your activities will make up for one year of goofing off. To solidify your chances, I would highly suggest doing some community service. Colleges like that sort of thing. If your math/science grades are solid, your chances are good.

You are fine. They will see that you improved and you have plenty of activities. Relax
