Would this be considered an attempted break in?
-
I live in eastern North Dakota but have been working in western North Dakota through my employer for the oil boom activites. I just got home earlier tonight after working a straight 10 day shift in the oil field area. Someone buzzed my apartment twice and since i was expecting nobody i looked outside and saw no familiar vehicles. Shortly after i heard a pounding on my apartment window since i live in the garden level. I peeked out the window and saw someone in dark clothing walking around the building on a cell phone. Ten minutes later someone was trying to open my door which was bolted shut, i looked through the peek hole and saw an african american wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a straight brim baseball cap, and two other men lingering in front of my door. I quickly grabbed my 12 gauge shotgun (dont worry i use it for bird hunting during the fall months). He was talking but it was not english or any language i could comprehend for that matter. He knocked and tried turning my door knob for about 3 minutes before my neighbor who is a foreigner walked by and from what i got out of his lingo was "white man lives there". The man tried about 30 seconds more before he left and was never a bother again. i looked outside my door and there was a scratch across my apartmet door, i am from a small town and never had such an encounter before. It was like he knew who i was and wanted to see me or wanted in my apartment. It was too late to call my aparment office and was too doggone tired to call the police and have them come over to file a report. Do you think this was an attempted break in or just was a misconstrued aparment the guy was looking for? I dont know what to think but either way i will tell my landlord first thing in the morning, what do you think? im just looking for some advive from the outside looking in instead of inside looking out.

Answer:
They did not attempt to break in at all, so where is the "attempted break in"? They knocked and the tested the door knob to see if it was locked. They made no attempt to unlock it, no attempt to enter by other means. It would have made more sense to see what they wanted. One weird thing here is you pretending not to be there. The second weird thing is you arming yourself. WTF? You either need a LOT more sleep or you need some therapy.

No, it's not an attempt to break in. They never tried to break in. People who are breakingin don't knock and make lots of noise.

I would have called the police as soon as you saw the guy walking your property and pounding your door. Who knows what they wanted or were attempting. If you don't know, we surely don't, but I'd rather have the cops come and straighten it out.

Oy vey, you don't need therapy, don't listen to the OMG GUN person above. People who live with stuff like this every day don't really understand when people who HAVEN'T lived with it are more cautious than they would be. Sounds to me like they expected someone else to be living in the apartment. Maybe it was previously rented by a girlfriend or relative and they hadn't been to the complex in a long time. If they were knocking and making a lot of noise, then no, it probably wasn't an attempted break in. In the future, though, just call the police if you are unsure. Eventually you'll learn that opening your door and asking what they want (with the security chain on) isn't as scary as you think. Color and language don't matter -- people are people and most of them are good. To the OMG GUN person above: wow judgmental much? Live in someone else's shoes the same way you would expect the OP to do. Not everyone has your life experiences. Yeesh.
