How does short term disability work?

Can I file a claim on my short term disability if I can't work + I get a small social security amount?

  • Because I don't make enough with my employer, I was forced to file for early social security to help. I have a short term disability plan (not with the job), and may need to be off work for 4 weeks after surgery. Will they take my social security amount into consideration when I file a claim?

  • Answer:

You have to read your policy (I know, what a drag). I say that because a lot of policies include a social security offset where your benefits are reduced by the amount of your SS benefits. A lot of people will include this option because it reduces the monthly premium of their disability policy. There is no way for us to tell you if you chose to go with the social security offset to save some money. After you review your policy, if you still aren't sure call the agent that sold you the policy.

You are working and getting Social Security retirement and you also have a private disability plan? If you have to be off work for a few weeks, your doctor can sign you off. Your other income does not factor into your private disability payments. That would be based on your salary I assume but I dont know much about private disabiity plans.

Disability is based on your WAGES that you EARN. Not your welfare benefits.
