What does it take to get a permit for driving in california?

Do i have to take an online driving course before i get my permit? i live in California?

some people say before you take your permit test you have to take an online test first is it true? please givve me the link for it!!! :D and i live in CALIFORNIA all states are diffrent

It is called drivers ed, and you take it online. After you complete the course (which educates you on the basics of driving and the rules) you will receive a slip showing your completion of the driver's ed course. After that, you can go down to your DMV office and take your permit test. Then you will have a driving permit. Most online courses cost money. I can't find a free drivers ed course, they used to have a lot of them around. Just google "drivers ed". I paid for this one: http://www.driveredtogo.com/default.aspx mainly because it was dirt cheap. But you can choose whatever is online.
