Is it normal that you can't hear yourself play the guitar at a guitar store? answer please it's short?

Ok. So today I went with my mom to Guitar Center and there wasn't very many people playing the guitar at first, just like this one guy playing and electric. And then when I went into the acoustic guitar room, where they had loads of acoustic ones, people started to come in and sit down and play the guitars in there you know just like trying them out and stuff. And so I was doing the same, but there were like ten people in the room and all of them were playing different stuff obviously and I was just playing basic chords (because I'm just a begginer). And I couldn't really hear myself play the guitar with all the other people in there. (Is that normal for a guitar shop?) Because all the other ones that I went to before, there were only a few people in there at a time playing, not like ten people at once. So it was really hard for me to get a sense of what the guitar I was playing sounded like. I felt like I girl guitarist on stage at a live concert where all you could hear was a screaming crowed and you couldn't hear yourself at all (I'm saying girl guitarist because I actually am a girl haha).. but is this normal? And how do guitarists at live concerts hear themselves? Because I tried playing just at a regular guitar shop and it was loud, let alone a concert? How do they hear themselves? And I don't have hearing problems either.. so that's not the problem. There were just so many people in the room at once that I couldn't hear myself. Why?

There are a few things here, but the main issue is that a Guitar Center (and some other music stores) when busy are loud enough to cause hearing damage. It does get ridiculous. I've used the acoustic room to try to get some space when I wanted to try out something, but since you had several people in there, it would be difficult. In addition, I think you were probably playing softly, as you're a beginner and I'm guessing were trying to get a feel and hear the guitar rather than having everyone else hear you (which many people seem to do). So, try smaller shops and/or try to go at times when they're not likely to be busy. If it's a shop that provides private lessons, you may even ask if you can take the guitar into an empty room. As for performing, musicians typically can hear themselves, both from their instruments and, depending on the type of music, through the stage monitoring systems. You'll also find that, as you learn, you'll become better, more confident and get much more volume out of the guitar.

That's dreadful... I live in a small town and when I go there's usually nobody else there. If you want to evaluate a guitar you need to listen to it very carefully, so you have to have a really quiet place. Otherwise, all I can suggest is that you buy something that experts all agree is top quality, and you don't need to try it first. You can get a Zager for under $500, and they are superb in every way. For about $200 a Sunlite is a good beginner to intermediate guitar... you can order one online. Look at the GW-1150, I have a black one and it's really nice.

Tim was right on, especially in reference to any Guitar Center. Of which, I have experienced as a customer over the years since their existence. And, they can be a regular circus when it comes to just browsing around. I am entertained by just watching and listening to what goes on. The good, bad and the ugly. But yes, shopping at these high volume stores (even some bigger music outlets with a wide variety of instruments especially) can be a real let down for those who are serious about what they are looking for. During the peak hours, for customer volumes. Being retired now, it affords me to go then at the 'off hours' and before school lets out, and never on the weekends. This of course provides plenty of opportunities to try out everything and talk shop with the technicians and staff. My bar and candy store(s). That is why I am still loyal and drop by more often at my local, long established, music stores to buy my gear over the years. GC offers a grand catalog of items to do my 'comparative shopping' in the long run. The guys at the GC's cower when they see me coming. But the music stores I favor, love me. Because I send many (a would-be customer) from a GC, to them. And I spend my big money there.
