What is 'passive' oxidation?

What is the oxidation number difference between MnO3- and MnO3?

  • In general if an element has a negative or a positive charge what effect does it have on the oxidation number? For example the oxidation number of MnO3 is +6 but what will the oxidation number MnO3- (notice the negative sign).

  • Answer:

    suppose O.N. of Mn = x u shud know that O.N. of O = -2 for MnO3- x + 3(-2) = -1 x = -1 +6 X = +5 for MnO3 x + 3(-2) = 0 x = +6 lemme give one more example for MnO3^-2 x + 3(-2) = -2 x = -2 +6 x = +4

Other answers

A negative sign makes the oxidation number go down by one (to +5 in this case).
