What areas of digital media do you think women are underrepresented in?

Could I be a feminist but still believe in chivalry?

  • I'm 15 years old and have a personal conflict at the moment. I follow a feminist close to the family who inspired me to join the (for lack of a better term) "cause". This feminist friend is NOT a feminazi. She does not hate men, nor is she a lesbian. She usually discusses rape culture, abuse in the pornography industry, media stereotypes, etc. etc. She believes in men's rights as well, so basically she believes in equality. I love her ideology and the ideology of her other college friends, but I have always been in love with Old Hollywood. Because of this, the idea of a woman acting like a lady and a man acting like a gentleman is just ingrained in me. I know some of you may think "WELL, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS", but hear me out for a moment. Is it possible to believe that while we are equal in terms of value, men and women are STRONGER than each other in some areas? I think of it as a sort of trump card. Women tend to be better nurturers, they trump men at that, but men tend to physically stronger, they trump women at that. I think women were made naturally more feminine (hence the word "feminine") and men were made to be "masculine". But I also feel that gender lines should be blurred. I feel confused because I want to be a feminine young lady who accepts the help of gentlemen, but I think a lot of women would view me as independent on men or just a plain idiot. What are your views? Could I still call myself a feminist but expect a guy to pay for dinner, open doors, etc.? (if it helps, I would always treat my future husband well. I believe in the golden rule)

  • Answer:

I believe that is a very balanced view-point actually. Um... It's a terrible comparison but it's what I'm familiar with so it's what I'll use. I play DnD. The dorky, tabletop game, you know what I'm talking about, right? Well, in DnD, different classes have different roles. The rouge is good at unlocking doors, disarming traps and general sneakiness. Barbarians are good at... Breaking stuff and scaring people. The classes are all made in such a way that they are pretty much equally useful. However, they're useful for different things. You would not want to let your groups rouge try to take on a big creature alone, nor would you want to ask the barbarian to jimmy the locked door open for you. It simply wouldn't go well, ya know? Separate roles, but of equal importance. Because every dungeon you run into is going to have both big creatures and locked doors. I personally wouldn't know what to do with a jar of closes pickles without a guy around... Not have pickles I guess... Though, I believe it is a fault of many men that they have to believe that they are superior because of their physical strength. We women have the advantage of compromise and understanding, thankfully, so we can play right along and let our other halves believe that they are, in fact, our better halves. Lol. So go ahead and call yourself a feminist dear. Just expect to need to explain a little from time to time.

You're actually just repeating sexist stereotypes, but you're young, you'll learn. How about, a) Stop using words made up by Rush Limbaugh (feminazi) b) Know the history of "chivalry" -- which is that they were mercenaries who killed, looted, and raped for cash

Forget attaching yourself to a label. Just strive to be a good woman.

Could I be a feminist but still believe in chivalry? ~~~ No! You would be a hypocrite! You're young enough to get really good at your hypocrisy if you practice real hard! Feminism is about equal rights and equal responsibility! Are you going to join the military? Men have to register, why shouldn't you?! Could I still call myself a feminist but expect a guy to pay for dinner, ~~~ If you are going to trade sex for dinner, then you'd be a prostitute, not a feminist. If you weren't going to give him anything in exchange, you are a parasite, a leech, a man-ipulator... but not a feminist. open doors, etc.? ~~~ What are you, crippled? You can't open a door? It sounds like you have some fancy notion of yourself that only exists in your ego! Some call it self delusion! The most greedy considers herself to be generous, charitable... Ego always thinks that you are 'more than you are', while, in fact, it makes you less!!! You're no 'feminist', hon, without the actions! It's real simple; Equal rights! Equal responsibility! For all!!!

Why would you think that one-size-fits-all? You are free to believe anything you want. You don't have to swallow anything hook, line and sinker. Relax and believe what you will. I, personally, believe in 'people's rights', whether it be male or female. Everyone is equal, and within that premise, we can be however we please.

To answer your question, yes. I feel like both men and women have set backs and advantages over the other gender that either makes them superior or inferior.

Well yeah.. I think you made some good points, your values are quite good and you're not asking for too much at all.

feminism (n) - Bing Dictionary fem·i·nism [ fémmə nìzzəm ] 1.belief in women's rights: belief in the need to secure rights and opportunities for women equal to those of men, or a commitment to securing these 2.movement for women's rights: the movement committed to securing and defending rights and opportunities for women that are equal to those of men I have been a True feminist for over 35 years... I am still a Lady, I recognize men and women are very different, I love men and have always appreciated their chivalry. Many women have misinterpreted the meaning of feminism and made this fight for equality a fight against men....so sad.

I think feminists can believe in chivalry. I don't expect it, but it's nice to have a man treat you as a gentlemen. Some feminists take the idea of strong female-hood too far. I don't think a strong woman always as to show she is better or stronger than a man. I think real feminists know when to let a man feel like a man. While I do not need a man to take care of me, protect me, or financially support me, I don't think it's terrible to let a man feel as if he is doing those things for me. However, I also know that a real man does not have a problem with me being a strong woman, and he will know that I am giving him a gift by letting him feel like he is the protector or whatnot. Yet, we will both know what the reality is and that we are both strong in our own ways.
