Why does the color of my eyes change?

Why do my eyes change color by the ocean?

  • So I usually have dark brown eyes. Yet every time I go to the beach, whether I'm in the ocean or not, someone has always pointed out to me that my eyes changed to green. My father has blue green eyes and my mother has dark brown eyes. Is there any reason why they only change by the ocean? And why do they change at all?

  • Answer:

Your eyes don't actually change colour. Under certain light, your eyes may appear to be a different colour, e.g. when you're at the beach and blue light is reflecting off the water. Have you ever looked closely at your irises (the coloured part) in the mirror? You may be surprised at how many colours are in there! My eyes are blue, but there is some brown and some green, which makes my eyes look slightly different even depending on the colour of my shirt. Perhaps you have a tinge of your father's eyes in yours, and when you go by the ocean the light reflected from off the ocean brings out the green that's in your eyes. Not sure exactly.
