Anemia and depression...is there a connection?
-
So my doctor says that I have iron deficiency anemia, I've been given pills...600mg per day...I havent been taking them because I just hate taking pills. I'm generally very unhealthy...i dont exercise or eat right and I'm very overweight. I feel tired most of the time and dont really feel like doing anything...i procrastinate a lot. In the past few months, I've noticed that I dont really leave the house even to hang out with friends, and I dont feel like doing anything at all...i used to like doing a lot of things, had lots of hobbies and interests...now i dont feel like doing anything. I was never a people person, never very social, but at least I had hobbies I could do even without people. Some of my family members have asked me if I'm depressed. My mom says its because of anemia, she keeps telling me to take the iron supplements. I do plan to but..i really hate pills. I feel really horrible... emotionally, mentally and physically. I dont think anemia could be causing all this. How severe of a health problem is anemia?? How much damage can it do?? And am I depressed? Are depression and anemia connected somehow?

Answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_deficiency_anemia You may want to read that link I posted for Wikipedia ....Its far to much to post here, but quite interesting. Anemia happens when a person's body does not produce enough red blood cells or when the blood cells are too small, misshapen or fragile to carry enough oxygen to the rest of the body. Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body, including your organs and muscles. If you are not getting enough oxygen, it can have a serious affect on your body. Effects Not getting enough oxygen can result in a lack of energy, shortness of breath, trouble concentrating, pale skin, fast heartbeat and depression. Depression may not be a direct result of anemia, but rather an indirect result due to how tired and worn out the person may feel. So if you hate taking pills you really should work on changing your diet before things get worse and to answer your question: Yes there is a connection, I really suggest you read the link I put in this comment I think you would be surprised.
