What are good men's casual shoes for heavy walking?

Good to wear walking shoes for jogging?

  • I just recently bought myself a pair of New Balance running shoes. Although I just recently started to jog. I'm wondering if I should go back and return them for NB Walking shoes instead. I'm starting out lightly like jogging for 1 minute and then walking for like 3 minutes until I can maintain myself in jogging. I'm also heading to the gym and was wondering if it's okay to use the Running Shoes I bought as well. If not, just use the old pair of NB Walking shoes I had. I just need advice!! Also, I do find, personally, walking shoes to be the most comfortable shoes.

  • Answer:

you can walk in jogging sneakers but you can't jog in walking sneakers. NB are excellent sneakers for doing just about anything. I have several pair for doing all sorts of things like, jogging, walking, tennis, cross-training, basketball, etc. Ideally, it is best to have a pair of sneakers designed and suited for each particular activity but if this is not possible, I would buy a pair of NB cross-trainers. You can do almost any activity in them except maybe long distance running. Walking shoes should only be used for walking and not for other sports but you can certainly walk and/or jog in running sneakers. Do not try to jog with walking shoes on. For what you are doing right now, use jogging sneakers or cross-trainers and use the walking shoes for walking only.

Even if you're just jogging a little bit and mostly walking, you need to use running shoes. Running is actually quite a bit more stressful for joints and the soles of your feet compared to walking, and you need the extra cushioning and stability the running shoes gives you. Regarding the gym, if you're going to run on the treadmill you have to use running shoes. If you're just going to use the exercise bike or train weights, you don't need them as much. However most gyms I know don't like dirty shoes, so you'd have to get a new pair or just wash them in the sink :) Also note that you need your running shoes the most if you are running on hard ground. You don't need them as much if you are trail running. I would still prefer them to walking shoes though.
