Depo Provera Birth Control Shot?

Depo Provera Birth Control Shot?

  • I used to be on the pill, but i stopped taking it because my boyfriend & i weren't together. We finally decided to get back together, we've been together for about a year & a half off & on. and we do have sex quite a bit. But i talked to my doctor about getting back on some type of birth control because i'm 17 years old, so i don't want any children. I don't want to be a mother this young. But i was reading some reviews on the computer about the shot, and some people absolutely loved it, and some people hated it. I'm about 112 pounds, and i have a really fast metabolism, so i really don't gain any weight. I've seen that alot of people we're complaning about weight gain. I really hate getting my period, and i've heard the shot gets rid of it. SOMETIMES. i've read about having it for a month straight?! /: your opinions would be greatly appreciated! :) oh, and i don't need anyone commenting on this saying i'm "too young" to be having sex, or anything like that. I'm almost 18, i know my responsibilities and my actions. It's my life, and my choices. thanks :)

I was on the Depo shot for several years and I personally had a good experiance with it. No periods, weight gain was not from the shot...but did have it. Didnt have to worry about taking pills, etc. Now my husband would tell a different storie. He said that every 2 1/2 months when it would come close to the time for me to get another shot, I would turn into a raging *****. After I got off the shots, my hormones seemed to even out and I no longer had those moments. Except when I am PMSing...duh...it is not going to go away completely. :) Each persons body is different from the next and there is no way to predict how your body will react to the shot. I would suggest trying it, I did like it.

I'm 15 years old & I'm taking the Depo Provera shot. I weigh 98 pounds & haven't really gained a pound since taking the shot. I rather enjoy taking it because my period has disappeared completely since taking it. The area in which I get the shot injected does become soar for maybe about 24 hours, but not too bad. & It's so much better than taking a pill daily. I highly recommend it. :) But my doctor did say that it can drain your bones of calcium, over a period of taking it the shot for 5-15 years. But just take a daily multi-vitamin and your bones should be just perfectly fine.

You can try out the same hormones in the Depro shot as a birth control pill in advance to see how your body reacts. If you are fine taking it as a pill, then you are usually fine with the shot. If you really want to avoid getting your period, there are approved safe pill regimes where you only get your period a few times a year.

Depo messes with your hormones, like many other kinds of birth control. I am one of the depo "haters". Not because of a bad experience, but simply because of the facts. If you are planning on being on Depo for any length of time, you will lose bone density. The experts recommend not using it for longer than 2 years to prevent any permanent damage. Because you are young and your body is still forming your "adult shape", I would strongly recommend that you stay away from it for the sake of your future health! That being said, I suggest an IUD. There are two types of implants, the Mirena (plastic with some hormone) and Copper (no hormone). They are inserted into your uterus and prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years. You don't need to upkeep it, you don't need to remember pills or shots... just replace it after 5 years with very minimal side effects and lighter periods. There is a higher initial cost, but it's a one-time payout. You don't need to buy anything after that. You'll probably feel uncomfortable for the first day, then you forget it's there.

I read somewhere that using the shot for a long time can lead to osteoporosis because it weakens the bones. Basically every website I've looked at says it should only be used as a last resort when you've tried everything else. I'd recommend pills or getting an IUD, the side effects of depo sound pretty nasty.
