Where can I learn online about how to make a small film?

OH, PLEASE HELP ME!!! I need to learn film animation. I would like to make short films using youtube clips.?

  • I've seen this question addressed on Yahoo answers before, but for some reason I could not use the answers given. i can't really afford to buy software. What I'd like to know is: is there some free software that actually works and a good tutorial on how to use it? I am looking for software that will select frames from a video and play them to create an animated effect. I want to learn more advanced animation, too, but I think that might come later. Still, can anyone indicate a good basic tutorial in how to animate drawings, 2D or 3D? i really do not have even one clue. i do not have a camera, not even a webcam. Any advice on buying? Finally, and I'll put this in a separate question, as well, but I have been advised to seek out design internships as a good way to learn animation moviemaking skills. I want to attend Design Week in nyc and a fashion week as well though that has just passed I think. Any advice on how to find an internship?

Your computer platform whether Mac or Windows based should have some video editing built in which may be too basic for what you need. I'm assuming you've already searched for free software and can't get what you need so you may have to pay out a little which makes it important to get the best for your money. Some of the more expensive software such as Maya, will do a free trial which will give you a feel for what you need. But to be honest, I found Maya too complicated and the free trial was up before I got truly to grips with it! At over $3k it is very pricey anyway. My bet would be on IllusionMage at $47 which you could tryout for 60 days and get your money back. I've a feeling if you try it you'll get hooked though as it is pretty versatile (see the reviews in resource box below). Basically, you can get a lot of what Maya and similar have, with video tutorials to help you out. Many professionals use this program as well so worth giving it a look. For your money you will get features that include advanced simulation tools such as the stop motion animation you need, rigid body dynamics, fluid dynamics, and softbody dynamics, modifier based modeling tools, powerful character animation tools. You can also create dynamic 3D models by RTS animation so models can move back-and-forth, float, or rotate etc. Anyway, I admit to being biased, read the user reviews etc but it is worth considering IMHO.

You can select individual frames from a movie by playing it in a player, using Alt+PrintScreen and paste the screen capture into a pain program for editing. That doesn't need any software at all. But you'd still need a movie creation package to make a video from the still images, or if you wanted to cut / paste actual clips. See the below list of video editing software, many, many packages are totally freeware. Check each package's wiki page for a run-down on features, and then google around for tutorials. Most free packages will have a homepage with tutorials and downloads linked. For 3D, learn Blender, than perhaps other packages which have free versions (there's free version of Maya, at least). Also checkout stuff like MakeHuman which can make models to import into blender. Many specialized 3D packages can import/export resources and allow you to create more advanced stuff.
